Sas Jovanoski, owner of Sas’s Deli in Subiaco, Western Australia, is giving up distributing plastic bags to his customers and moving to recycled paper bags.
Sas was concerned with the impact his business had on the environment, and after investigating the alternatives, decided to provide paper bags to his customers.
However, because the size of his order was modest, he was unable to purchase the bags at a price comparable to plastic bags. His business was using about 1500 plastic bags a week and therefore did not qualify for bulk discount prices when purchasing this number of paper bags.
Sas decided to go ahead with his plan and absorb the additional cost within the business. He estimates it will cost his business an additional $20 000 a year but has decided not to pass this cost on to his customers.
By using the Plastic Bag Reduction Toolkit, retailers like Sas will be able to have access to discount bulk prices where retailers can purchase alternate bags at the same costs as the bigger retailers.
