Local outdoor, travel and adventure retailer, Paddy Pallin, said NO to plastic bags a few years ago.
Well-known for its environmental initiatives, the company set up its 'Don't Bag the Environment' program in 1998. Each time a customer declines a bag at the checkout, Paddy Pallin donates 20 cents to an environmental organisation or cause. Every six months the company changes the organisation or cause which receives the funds raised.
Past recipients include Clean Up Australia, Rural Fire Services, Kosciusko Huts Association, Birds Australia and the Australian Conservation Foundation.
Robert Pallin, Chairman of Paddy Pallin said the program has a huge success for their business.
"Our program aims to help preserve natural habitats. We want to reduce the number of plastic bags going into the environment, reduce the amount of packaging waste and conserve energy resources that would otherwise be used to make bags. By donating to environmental projects every time a customer refuses a bag, we know that we're helping the environment twice. That's a great feeling!"
"Customer response has also been fantastic. When they reach the checkout, every customer is asked if they need a bag. Staff will advise customers that if they say no, 20 cents will be donated to help preserve our environment and then point out who is the current recipient."
"The staff member then physically opens the till, takes out 20 cents and puts it into the collection box. Customers love seeing a transparent process - on some occasions they have been known to add some of their own money for the cause. It feels good to help make an impact. Customers know we are serious about the environment and it is great to be able to demonstrate this every time they shop with us."
Robert said that for a small investment every year the environmental benefits can be substantial. The program is widely promoted via Paddy Pallin's member magazine, posters in-store and signage behind the charity box.
"We really enjoy being able to provide our customers with options, and at the same time reduce any waste through excess packaging and unnecessary bags. However for us the real kick is being able to help environmental groups continue their important work and to see customers respond so positively to the initiative. As an outdoor retailer we like being able to help protect the environment and wilderness."
