| WHAT'S IT COSTING THE COUNTRY? |
 |
 |
Plastic bags are costing our country more than you'd think...
The cost to the environment alone is huge - Australians used 3.9 billion lightweight single use high density polyethylene (HDPE) bags in 2007 with many millions ending up as litter, blocking waterways and harming our wildlife.
2.96 billion of these came from supermarkets, while the others were used by fast food restaurants, service stations, convenience stores and liquor stores and other shops.
The financial cost of rectifying environmental problems caused by plastic bag waste and litter is enormous, not to mention the total economic cost to the Australian retail sector of supplying plastic bags to customers.
